A unique public art installation has arrived at the Estate Development Company (EDC) owned Jindee estate – five pelicans perched on timber sourced from the old Bunbury wharf.
EDC Chair, Fiona Roche said that the pelicans are about more than visual appeal 
and are a reflection of the strong connection we have with our coastline in Western Australia.
“Public art has an important role in enriching communities – not only is it to be enjoyed by people of all ages, but it is about expressing a shared sentiment and sparking imagination or memories,” Ms Roche said.
“Pelicans are a natural fit for our new beachside community as they link back to the nostalgia of growing up around Perth and enjoying our beautiful beaches.”
The five pelican sculptures have been installed at the square-about intersection of Oceania and Midsummer Ave upon entry to the Jindee estate in the northern suburb of Jindalee.
Designer and creator Rick Grigsby said that pelicans feature folded origami-style plates and 30 metres of welds.
Together with his brother Ben, Rick designed, planned, sourced materials and constructed each of the five different pelican designs, reminiscent of their own childhood.
“In Western Australia, pelicans are a common sight and one that evokes strong memories associated with the lifestyle we are so lucky to enjoy here,” Rick said.
“As kids Rick and I grew up along the northern beaches – fishing, diving and catching crays, and the pelicans were always there and a a part of these experiences,” Rick said.
